Being a voice actor means owning your own small business. And, as with many small businesses, that means you have to manage a LOT of different roles…or in other words, you’ve gotta wear a lot of different hats:
- You have to act, of course
- You have to direct yourself
- You have to engineer your own audio
- Be your own accountant
- And secretary
- And marketing director
- And researcher.
It can be overwhelming! So, my best suggestion is: wear one hat at a time. You can’t fully focus on acting if, at the same time you are watching the waveform to make sure you haven’t clipped. You can’t fully be focused on acting if you are thinking about a different lead in line you want to use on your next take. You can only do one thing at a time if you want to do it well.
In this video I will take you through the way I separate various steps of the auditioning process in order to avoid overwhelm and get a better result. Using a commercial audition, I’m going to show you how I go from being the engineer, to the researcher, to the director, to the actor, back to the director, back to the engineer, and then to my own personal secretary. But, I’ll only wear one hat at a time.
