Working Wednesday: Bad Impressions

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, one of my favorite mantras as a voice-over actor and coach: A bad vocal impression is still a good character voice.

As voice-over artists, we’re not impressionists, we’re actors. It’s helpful when clients give us direction and inspiration, but I’ve had to remind clients more than once that my version of a character will never sound exactly like the inspiration. I will only be using it as guidance. If they are looking for a spot-on impression, that’s not a service I offer.

But, on my own time, I’m full of impressions. The problem is…they’re not very good. But it turns out, imitating cartoon characters and voices on the radio does help me expand my range for future projects. Oh, and also, it’s fun!

What are some of your WORST impressions? Comment below!
